In the beginning Candide expects to achieve happiness without working for his goal and only taking the easy way out of all situations. However, by the end of the book the character realized that to achieve happiness a lot of work, compromises, and sacrifices are necessary. à à à à à Candide is a person of privilege who began life in the Castle of Westphalia. While a part of the castle-life, Candide was taught by Dr. Pangloss. Pangloss is a philosopher who teaches there is a cause for all things and that everything is all for the good, even though a person may not understand it at the time. Suddenly, however, Candide is exiled from the privileged confines of the castle when he is caught kissing Cunegonde, the daughter of the Baron. Upon his exile Candide immediately begins to face adversities. Candide finds himself in the army simply because he is the right size. His life in the army is nothing but turmoil and hardship. Despite the misfortunes of army life, Candide continues to believe there is a cause and effect for all things. à à à à à After leaving the army, Candide once again is paired with his mentor Dr. Pangloss. In his play, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare weaves a timeless tale. Although it is over 400 years old, Romeo and Juliet, is as interesting today as it was at its inception and my guess is that its appeal lies in its subject matter. Shakepeare picked a theme thatââ¬â¢s been known to cause indigestion and sleep loss for centuries. And yet, regardless of the ills associated with it, it remains a topic of worldwide interest. And that is simply, love. My mother says that love is one of the most overused, misunderstood words in the English language. Over time, Iââ¬â¢ve asked friends what they thought ââ¬Å"itâ⬠was. Iââ¬â¢ve always received differing answers. Itââ¬â¢s when he opens the door. Itââ¬â¢s when she does the laundry. Itââ¬â¢s that thing that causes insanity. It doesnââ¬â¢t exist. It existed only in the middle ages. Itââ¬â¢s what everyone is hunting for and no one can find. Forget about it. Merriam Websterââ¬â¢s Collegiate Dictionary (Tenth Edition) defines it as: 1. (1): strong affection for another rising out of kinship or personal ties. 2: warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion. 3: unselfish loyal and benevolet concern for the good of another. 4: to thrive on. Spiritual masters say that love is all there is. They also say in order to truly know something, one must know itââ¬â¢s opposite. To know hot, one must experience cold. To know sorrow, one must have known joy. To love, one must hate. (Or at least come pretty damned close to it.) Without darkness, one cannot appreciate light. Professors of English say that the greatest writers are those who can ââ¬Å"hookâ⬠their readers. Those who can propel a story forward. Divide and contrast. Divide and contrast, they say. Friction produced by opposing forces creates great drama. Shakespeare is a great dramatist. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare opens with a prologue that basically outlines the entire play. After finishing line fourteen, the reader isnââ¬â¢t required to continue reading because he/she knows the outcome. Shakespeare has given the reader the end. There really is no reason to read on. And yet they do. The reader continues because Shakespeare was a genius at creating dramatic tension. In Romeo and Juliet, he uses two main vehicles to do so. One is the theme of love (Romeo and Juliet) versus hate (The Montagues and the Capulets). The other is the theme of darkness and light. For purposes of this paper, I will look briefly at the use of light and dark imagery as it is associated with the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet.

Rachel could only stare. I traveled three thousand miles for this kind of hospitality? This guy was no Martha Stewart. ââ¬Å"With all due respect,â⬠she fired back, ââ¬Å"I am also under presidential orders. I have not been told my purpose here. I made this trip on good faith.â⬠ââ¬Å"Fine,â⬠Ekstrom said. ââ¬Å"Then I will speak bluntly.â⬠ââ¬Å"You've made a damn good start.â⬠Rachel's tough response seemed to jolt the administrator. His stride slowed a moment, his eyes clearing as he studied her. Then, like a snake uncoiling, he heaved a long sigh and picked up the pace. ââ¬Å"Understand,â⬠Ekstrom began, ââ¬Å"that you are here on a classified NASA project against my better judgment. Not only are you a representative of the NRO, whose director enjoys dishonoring NASA personnel as loose-lipped children, but you are the daughter of the man who has made it his personal mission to destroy my agency. This should be NASA's hour in the sun; my men and women have endured a lot of criticism lately and deserve this moment of glory. However, due to a torrent of skepticism spearheaded by your father, NASA finds itself in a political situation where my hardworking personnel are forced to share the spotlight with a handful of random civilian scientists and the daughter of the man who is trying to destroy us.â⬠I am not my father, Rachel wanted to shout, but this was hardly the moment to debate politics with the head of NASA. ââ¬Å"I did not come here for the spotlight, sir.â⬠Ekstrom glared. ââ¬Å"You may find you have no alternative.â⬠The comment took her by surprise. Although President Herney had said nothing specific about her assisting him in any sort of ââ¬Å"publicâ⬠way, William Pickering had certainly aired his suspicions that Rachel might become a political pawn. ââ¬Å"I'd like to know what I'm doing here,â⬠Rachel demanded. ââ¬Å"You and me both. I do not have that information.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm sorry?â⬠ââ¬Å"The President asked me to brief you fully on our discovery the moment you arrived. Whatever role he wants you to play in this circus is between you and him.â⬠ââ¬Å"He told me your Earth Observation System had made a discovery.â⬠Ekstrom glanced sidelong at her. ââ¬Å"How familiar are you with the EOS project?â⬠ââ¬Å"EOS is a constellation of five NASA satellites which scrutinize the earth in different ways-ocean mapping, geologic fault analyses, polar ice-melt observation, location of fossil fuel reserves-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Fine,â⬠Ekstrom said, sounding unimpressed. ââ¬Å"So you're aware of the newest addition to the EOS constellation? It's called PODS.â⬠Rachel nodded. The Polar Orbiting Density Scanner (PODS) was designed to help measure the effects of global warming. ââ¬Å"As I understand it, PODS measures the thickness and hardness of the polar ice cap?â⬠ââ¬Å"In effect, yes. It uses spectral band technology to take composite density scans of large regions and find softness anomalies in the ice-slush spots, internal melting, large fissures-indicators of global warming.â⬠Rachel was familiar with composite density scanning. It was like a subterranean ultrasound. NRO satellites had used similar technology to search for subsurface density variants in Eastern Europe and locate mass burial sites, which confirmed for the President that ethnic cleansing was indeed going on. ââ¬Å"Two weeks ago,â⬠Ekstrom said, ââ¬Å"PODS passed over this ice shelf and spotted a density anomaly that looked nothing like anything we'd expected to see. Two hundred feet beneath the surface, perfectly embedded in a matrix of solid ice, PODS saw what looked like an amorphous globule about ten feet in diameter.â⬠ââ¬Å"A water pocket?â⬠Rachel asked. ââ¬Å"No. Not liquid. Strangely, this anomaly was harder than the ice surrounding it.â⬠Rachel paused. ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠¦ it's a boulder or something?â⬠Ekstrom nodded. ââ¬Å"Essentially.â⬠Rachel waited for the punch line. It never came. I'm here because NASA found a big rock in the ice? ââ¬Å"Not until PODS calculated the density of this rock did we get excited. We immediately flew a team up here to analyze it. As it turns out, the rock in the ice beneath us is significantly more dense than any type of rock found here on Ellesmere Island. More dense, in fact, than any type of rock found within a four-hundred-mile radius.â⬠Rachel gazed down at the ice beneath her feet, picturing the huge rock down there somewhere. ââ¬Å"You're saying someone moved it here?â⬠Ekstrom looked vaguely amused. ââ¬Å"The stone weighs more than eight tons. It is embedded under two hundred feet of solid ice, meaning it has been there untouched for over three hundred years.â⬠Rachel felt tired as she followed the administrator into the mouth of a long, narrow corridor, passing between two armed NASA workers who stood guard. Rachel glanced at Ekstrom. ââ¬Å"I assume there's a logical explanation for the stone's presence hereâ⬠¦ and for all this secrecy?â⬠ââ¬Å"There most certainly is,â⬠Ekstrom said, deadpan. ââ¬Å"The rock PODS found is a meteorite.â⬠Rachel stopped dead in the passageway and stared at the administrator. ââ¬Å"A meteorite?â⬠A surge of disappointment washed over her. A meteorite seemed utterly anti-climactic after the President's big buildup. This discovery will single-handedly justify all of NASA's past expenditures and blunders? What was Herney thinking? Meteorites were admittedly one of the rarest rocks on earth, but NASA discovered meteorites all the time. ââ¬Å"This meteorite is one of the largest ever found,â⬠Ekstrom said, standing rigid before her. ââ¬Å"We believe it is a fragment of a larger meteorite documented to have hit the Arctic Ocean in the seventeen hundreds. Most likely, this rock was thrown as ejecta from that ocean impact, landed on the Milne Glacier, and was slowly buried by snow over the past three hundred years.â⬠Rachel scowled. This discovery changed nothing. She felt a growing suspicion that she was witnessing an overblown publicity stunt by a desperate NASA and White House-two struggling entities attempting to elevate a propitious find to the level of earth-shattering NASA victory. ââ¬Å"You don't look too impressed,â⬠Ekstrom said. ââ¬Å"I guess I was just expecting somethingâ⬠¦ else.â⬠Ekstrom's eyes narrowed. ââ¬Å"A meteorite of this size is a very rare find, Ms. Sexton. There are only a few larger in the world.â⬠ââ¬Å"I realize-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"But the size of the meteorite is not what excites us.â⬠Rachel glanced up. ââ¬Å"If you would permit me to finish,â⬠Ekstrom said, ââ¬Å"you will learn that this meteorite displays some rather astonishing characteristics never before seen in any meteorite. Large or small.â⬠He motioned down the passageway. ââ¬Å"Now, if you would follow me, I'll introduce you to someone more qualified than I am to discuss this find.â⬠Rachel was confused. ââ¬Å"Someone more qualified than the administrator of NASA?â⬠Ekstrom's Nordic eyes locked in on hers. ââ¬Å"More qualified, Ms. Sexton, insofar as he is a civilian. I had assumed because you are a professional data analyst that you would prefer to get your data from an unbiased source.â⬠Touche. Rachel backed off. She followed the administrator down the narrow corridor, where they dead-ended at a heavy, black drapery. Beyond the drape, Rachel could hear the reverberant murmur of a crowd of voices rumbling on the other side, echoing as if in a giant open space. Without a word, the administrator reached up and pulled aside the curtain. Rachel was blinded by a dazzling brightness. Hesitant, she stepped forward, squinting into the glistening space. As her eyes adjusted, she gazed out at the massive room before her and drew an awestruck breath.

Naturalist and interpretationist social science Essay
The naturalist approach to social sciences is based on content. The naturalist actually pays attention to what people say and considers their life stories as revealing phenomena. On the other hand interpretational approach, if people have beliefs and desires, an interpreter ascribes them. In this approach there are no independent facts of the matter about content. So there should be some way in which the content is interpreted as a set of revealing set of beliefs. In other words, there should be some agent and a system of methods (procedures) with which the interpretation is done. So, the basic assumption in interpretationist approach is that there is an acceptable behavior of the agent whose relation to the environment is understood and that the beliefs of the agent will match those of the subject he is interpreting (Davidson. D, 1993). The basic conflict between these two approaches is that the naturalist approach accepts the contents of the life stories of what people say, on the other hand the interpretationist accepts only those beliefs and desires that are ascribed by an interpreter. The naturalist accepts that independent facts can exist on the other hand the Interpretationalism does not accept independent facts about mental content. The naturalist accepts what people say on the other hand unless ways of interpreting the spoken word is not found Interpretationalism does not accept the set of beliefs that are held by person making the utterances. Let us consider a more general fact that is studied by social sciences, that if the supply of a product decreases then, ââ¬Å"other things being equalâ⬠the price for their product will increase. The naturalist may study the life story of a commodity dealer who may give an account of how the prices of the commodities that he dealt with like wheat; barley and rye went up whenever there was a shortage of these commodities. The naturalist may then visit a grocer who may give a lifetime account of how every shortage led to increase in the prices of products he studies. The naturalist may proceed to take several such life stories, statistically significant and establish the cause and effect relationship between the shortage of supply and price increase. In case of Interpretationalism the scientist would approach an interpreter, in case of a commodity market it would not be the commodity dealer but an expert who would interpret the behavior of the dealers. The task of the interpretationist would be to first select the agent (agent) on the basis of his behavior in relationship to the market. The interpretationist would study the relationship of the expert with that of the commodity market, and attempt to ascertain if his beliefs are similar to those of his. Then the expert will interpret the behavior or the utterances of the commodity dealers and reach a conclusion that if the supply of a product decreases, then, ââ¬Å"other things being equalâ⬠the price for the product will increase. Currently, using an expert opinion is an interpretationist approach to market research. The strength of the naturalist approach in establishing that that if the supply of a product decreases then, ââ¬Å"other things being equalâ⬠the price for their product will increase is that the naturalist gets information direct from the dealers, that is from the people who are the actual actors. In addition, getting information from several actors increases the validity of the study as well as provides scope for statistical analysis. On the other hand the weakness of such an approach is that the naturalist may misinterpret the data from dealers. For, example the dealers may not eliminate the factors relating to ââ¬Å"other things being equalâ⬠. It is possible that factors like a substantially increased demand may have led to the increase in prices but because the naturalist depends on the dealerââ¬â¢s accounts he may accept their interpretation that the prices of commodities have gone up because of decrease in supply. The strength of the interpretationist approach is that the interpreter or the agent has the expertise to interpret the utterances of the dealers. His relationship to the market (environment) is such that he has the ability to make a learned interpretation of what the market dealers utter. In addition, the agent is supposed to have beliefs that are similar to those of the interpretationist. In other words he has the sagacity to take into consideration ââ¬Å"other things being equalâ⬠. The weakness of this approach is that the interpretationist has to depend on the interpreter or the expert. He does not have the facility of large numbers. It is not easy to subject the information to numerical analysis. In addition, there is a chance of errors in interpretation because the selection of the agent may be faulty. The agentââ¬â¢s relationship to the market (environment) may not be as close as required. In addition, the beliefs of the agent may be at variance with that of the researcher. In both these cases the results would be erroneous. To sum, there is a conflict in the approach of the naturalist and the interpretationist. Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages.

It was like she ate a dictionary! Doctors said that her bra in could have been affected by the severe illness she had. She became a war freak as well. She is also insecure for having less attention from her dad and from her very much loved man, Johnson (played by Dingdong Dantes) who admires Dora a lot.Dora (Kimmyââ¬â¢s twin sister) on the other side isnââ¬â¢t so smart but not so dumb as well. Provide an example of how confidentiality would be breached. Effective communication is a two-way process of giving and receiving information. Effective communication skills are important when developing positive relationships with children, young people and adult. Effective communication is important to develop a good rapport. You need to support children and young people in making choices. There are many forms of communication; there is verbal, non-verbal, written format and body language. You need to consider the forms of communication for the appropriate age and language. If you were communicating with little children you need to position your body to their level, you need to come face to face with them instead of looking down at them. With people of different abilities you tend to use hand gestures and rely on body language. While speaking to other staff members in the school you speak to them in a more formal way. It is important to know the cultural beliefs of everyone in the community as some cultures can cause communication barriers. As a Muslim in the school it would be hard to use eye contact as it is against their beliefs. You need to be able to create an atmosphere in which everyone feels involved and confident to communicate. You need to adapt communication for different needs. Other communication barriers that could occur are having misunderstandings, disagreements and lack of time. If a disagreement was to arise in the school I would stay calm. I would be assertive and discuss the issue in private. I would get the people involved in the disagreement together and talk through the problem. If talking calmly didnââ¬â¢t sort the problem out then the next step would be to ask someone else to step in who isnââ¬â¢t bias and see what they could suggest. If these steps didnââ¬â¢t work you would have to work your way up the ranks until you reach the head teacher who would then have to inform the governors. This is a problem for the two parties involved as formal steps would be taken and a tribunal would be carried out. You need to record all progress made within the school, including any difficulties you find children or employees are having as well as achievements that are made. Adults are role models for all young people so it is important to be a caring person, you need to be approachable, genuine and a good time keeper.
